In today’s blog, I’m here to talk about how any person who isn’t good in writing can develop a set of writing skills throughout taking a course in freshman english composition. When my professor first assigned us this portfolio I was so unsure because I didn’t know yet how much I improved in my writing as well as doing an online portfolio how to make one through CUNY Academic Common . I come from a different country where English isn’t my first language, but my second so, I have a hard time understanding the English language also grammar how it is properly used and as well as citing when being used in essays properly.   

When I first began my class in Psychoanalysis in the writing section my very first assignment was a reflection on a literacy narrative assignment we had to do based on two images. The first outcome is exploring and analyzing your own and others’ writing a variety of genres and rhetorical situations using your reflection based on my literacy narrative.   

Based on my reflection I decided to edit my final paragraph on my reflection to see the difference myself. After editing my paragraph I’ve come to realize how much editing your writing can develop and change once it is corrected properly. In my Reflection of my Literacy Narrative, I analyzed my writing process and how I looked at the genre and the rhetorical situation (stance, audience, media).

My second outcome in writing learning section is developing strategies for reading, drafting, revising, and editing. My peer review for the Exploratory Essay helped me revise and edit the first draft of my essay. While doing my peer review which Mohamed was my partner to peer review my paper not only did I learn a lot about my partner which he is funny.

I also learned my weaknesses in my writing skills that Mohammed introduced to me and helped me understand my writing and what can I do to develop my writing. Which was my poor grammar and  the purpose of my writing for.

Introducing the third outcome which is practicing the systematic application of citation conventions  this is one of my citations for my Summary and Response Essay.

My Work Cited page I used the MLA Citation guide online to practice applying systematic application of citation conventions. I realized after handing in my citations that how improperly my citations were since citations go alphabetically in order. It felt good properly citing my work correctly for future paper works. I now know how to properly to cite my citations.

In the fourth writing outcome which is recognizing and practicing key rhetorical terms and strategies when engaging in writing situations.  

Here is an example of my literary narrative essay and using the material I learned in class. While writing the Literacy Narrative, I recognized and practiced writing key rhetorical terms and strategies when engaged in writing the Literacy Narrative.

In the fifth section of learning writing outcomes, in english composition class we had to develop and engage in the collaborative and social aspects of writing processes.

So in FIQWS class we had to comment by identifying the sources  on how our classmates  students In class during the process of our portfolios we commented and socialized in students work and how we could identify citations and improve our writing skills 

the sixth section of learning writing outcomes the class overall had to understand and use print and digital technologies to address a range of audiences . Some particular social aspects were Blackboard, working together in groups for class assignments and as well as discussions on Blackboard commenting on other students assignments. 

In our writing section class we use BlackBoard to communicate with our classmates as our audience not only did Blackboard help us communicate with our classmates but we got to correct our mistakes using blackboard as our platform.

the seventh section of learning writing outcomes was to locate research sources (including academic journal articles, magazine and newspaper articles) in the library’s databases or archives and on the internet and evaluate them for credibility, accuracy, timeliness, and bias

During my semester City College of New York the English composition class had a two visits to the library with Professor Gibbons and he explained us to use databases and how to properly use citations and look databases by using different words to help find what you’re specifically looking for as well as books what libraries to find textbooks and pdf books needed for class. 

Finally the last section of learning writing outcomes the class overall learned how to compose texts that integrate the student’s stance and language with appropriate sources, using strategies such as summary, critical analysis, interpretation, synthesis, and argumentation. While doing my final paper I struggled when it came to my Critical Research Paper and that was because while choosing a prompt I struggled immensely when it came to the thesis is because I get stuck on how to explain it in writing but when I explain it while talking its smoothly to understand. But as I continued to write the Critical Research Paper I struggled with writing the paper overall because

While writing my critical research paper, I used outside sources and summarization to properly defend my argumentation.

When taking this class I learned to make portfolio as well as how to use word-press and many of its features. I learned how to look for a research paper and how to do research effectively. As well as learning how to properly cite a scholarly article onto my critical research paper. Also one thing I would like to continue to work on after taking this class is learning how to use a scholarly article and learn how to properly give recognition to the author of the article when given in my essay.

After finishing this semester I gained new set of writing skills as well as a little bit of more confidence in my work. I am proud of what I’ve learned from taking this course. With immensely help from my FIQWS professors, my peers, as well as my tutors.
